Finnish as a second language instruction in early childhood education and pre-primary education

Finnish as a second language (S2) is goal-oriented and regular, language-aware instruction of the Finnish language that is provided to multilingual children. The instruction is based on inclusion, functionality and play. Images, drawing, expressions and gestures and, if necessary, baby sign language are used to support speech and language development. Language-aware instruction is part of the basic function of early childhood education, the starting point and basis of which are based on pedagogical planning and implementation in daily activities.

Instructions

Teachers in early childhood education and pre-primary education discuss and agree together with the parents on how to support, monitor and assess the child’s progress in learning Finnish. The early childhood education plan includes the child’s Finnish as a second language plan. Early childhood education teachers working with the group of children plan the teaching arrangements based on the goals set. The teacher discusses the progress made by the child with the parents.
